Kidney Health & you | How to prevent kidney diseases

Updated: Jul 8, 2023

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common and harmful: 1 out of 10 adult people worldwide have it, and if left untreated it can be deadly. While early detection allows for disease care and management to help prevent morbidity and mortality, and improve cost effectiveness and sustainability, kidney disease related mortality continues to increase yearly and is projected to be the 5th leading cause of death by 2040. So how can we reverse these statistics? By Bridging the knowledge gap to better kidney care.

There are simple things we can do to improve kidney health. Things as simple as staying hydrated, a good sodium and salt free diet, low sugar intake, avoid junk and fatty foods, staying physically active.

  1. Drink water regularly. Hydration improves kidney function and helps clear the toxins from the kidney.

  2. A good diet helps maintain the sodium and salt levels which otherwise can play havoc with your overall health. Remember the saying, “Salt is a silent killer.”

  3. Avoid sugar as much as possible to keep a check on your blood sugar levels.

  4. Avoid junk and fatty foods to lose unhealthy fat.

  5. Physical activities like exercise, walk, playing a sport help get rid of excess fat and maintaining your blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

  6. Don’t use over-the-counter painkillers and anti-inflammatory medicines without consulting your Doctor.

These are nothing but simple changes to our lifestyle without much effort.

All of us bear a collective responsibility to not only be aware of this disease but also educate others about the need to take care of the kidneys. Especially those with existing conditions like Hypertension, Obesity, Diabetes, etc. Encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle to maintain good kidney health, preserve kidney function longer in those with CKD, and increase overall general awareness of the importance of kidneys.

Kidneys play a very important role in your overall wellbeing. Take care of them.
